MOBILITY DEVICE RULES

These rules are intended to keep the infield safe and open to everyone, and they were revised after feedback from guests.

Allowed mobility scooters and prohibited devices

APPROVED MOBILITY DEVICES

Wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, and braces are allowed anywhere people walk. A mobility scooter is allowed when it is commercially made, electric, and has three or four wheels. It may seat one or two people, and it cannot be larger than 32 inches wide by 63 inches long. It cannot have a roof, and it cannot be gas-powered.

NOT PERMITTED

The infield is crowded and people are on foot, so a device that is too large, too fast, or hard to stop is not allowed.

Golf carts are not allowed, in any size. A scooter cannot tow a trailer or anything else.

One- and two-wheeled devices are not allowed, including Segways. Bicycles, unicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, wheelie scooters, and anything else that is not on the approved list stay outside the Speedway.

If your own device is not allowed, use an approved rental scooter or the free ADA shuttle. Shuttles leave from the spectator gates and go to the scooter rentals. Space is not guaranteed, so please reserve ahead by calling 423-569-1933 or visiting Scooter Time.

Event staff may not ask what a person’s disability is, at any age. A person renting a scooter does not have to explain a diagnosis. If you bring your own scooter or another power-driven device that is not a wheelchair, it still has to be on the approved list. A state disability parking placard does not change that. The placard, or your statement that the device is for a mobility disability, only confirms why you are using an approved device. This follows the federal ADA rule for mobility devices, 28 CFR 36.311.
